2024 In Review: Alliance Projects, Awards, and Grade A Talent.

We’ve learned a lot in our 87 years as Emil Anderson Construction. One of the lessons we’ve learned is that if you’re not changing, you’re not growing. In 2024, we had the fortune of experiencing both: change and growth within our organization as well as accomplishing some monumental projects. Join us for the highlights below.

Big Wins & Key Accomplishments

In 2024, Emil Anderson Construction had the opportunity to work on some incredibly rewarding projects, including completed work that enhanced the flow of goods, improved commuter safety, and restored critical infrastructure.

After ten years of construction, Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 marked the completion of one of the most significant road upgrade projects in BC’s recent history. Emil Anderson Construction collaborated with Aecon Group Inc. and Parsons Inc. to form the Kicking Horse Canyon Constructors (KHCC). Together, the team completed the most technical stage of the project within a tight timeframe while navigating geotechnical variability and active traffic in a remote location. For its innovative approach, Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 was awarded the prestigious 2024 Global Best Project Award in the Road/Highway category by Engineering News-Record (ENR).

The Jaffray Overhead and Big Sand Creek Bridge Replacement Project was another significant lift. Following a competitive procurement process, Emil Anderson Construction was selected to lead the project. Our team broke ground in late 2023, replacing two key bridges on Highway 3 in the East Kootenays, driven by a female-led team who saw it through to completion. By late 2024, substantial work was achieved, enhancing the safety and reliability of the highway while better accommodating the 6,000 vehicles that travel the route daily.

Emil Anderson Construction and the City of Merritt celebrated a major milestone in 2024 with the Middlesboro Bridge replacement. The collapsed bridge, which was washed out during the 2021 Atmospheric River, severed a critical transportation link in Merritt and a vital supply chain for local Indigenous communities. Soon after the provincial government came through with $10 million in funding, Emil Anderson Construction started work on what would be the final rehabilitation project from the flood.

The project was remarkably efficient—starting with one of the smoothest, most exciting procurement processes in our history. That momentum carried through from construction to final closeout, which culminated in the bridge’s grand reopening. The event was celebrated by 150 community members, including Elders who shared meaningful words surrounding the significance of the project along with traditional songs, drumming, and prayers.

On the Culture Front

When it came to the Emil Anderson Construction team this year, there was a lot to celebrate too. With a focus on making roles more purpose-built, our operations department redefined certain positions, resulting in more efficiency, more self-confidence in roles, and more cross-team collaboration. Our pre-construction team experienced significant growth, and our Pre-construction Manager, Dallas Banman, has done an incredible job of focusing the team and embracing the changes. Our Business Development Manager, Stan Maluk, put it best, “Dallas is a treat to work with. He’s focused, he’s brilliant, and he gets it done.”

To close out an already fantastic year, Emil Anderson Construction was selected for the BC Transportation Contractor of the Year Award in Paving. Our highway paving field team earned this well-deserved recognition for setting the standard with exceptional quality, delivered on time and within budget.

Last year was a busy one with no signs of slowing down in 2025. We’re looking forward to delivering more transformative projects, including the Highway 1 Widening Project at Jumping Creek, multiple upcoming contracts in Kelowna, adjacent Highway 1 projects near Salmon Arm, and Highway 8 reconstruction near Merritt.
