Vedder Bridge Replacement
Project Overview
Emil Anderson Construction with Klohn Crippen Berger and Urban Systems Ltd were contracted to replace the existing Vedder Bridge with a new structural steel tied-arch structure. The update provided increased flood clearance, wider lanes, and new multi-use pathways. In addition to the bridge structure, the project scope included realignment of the approaching roads, relocation of existing utilities, and construction of a new single-lane roundabout. Of the three teams that submitted responses to the RFP, EAC’s proposal received the highest technical score and was well under the city's budget.
- Bridge was assembled on land and launched into place, minimizing environmental impacts, reducing safety risks, improving quality, and expediting the project schedule.
- Design of the new alignment enabled the majority of construction to occur offline to existing traffic, minimizing traffic disruption on an already congested roadway.
- The innovative construction design controlled costs and fulfilled the city’s desire for a feature design.
- Winner of the 2018 Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) Design-Build Award of Excellence in the major structural project category.
An Innovative Delivery Method
“It is a pleasure to highlight these design-build projects that not only got the job done in time and on budget, but include a high level of innovation. The results underscore the benefits of design-build—the team approach—as a project delivery method.”
- Gary Bale, CDBI chair, on the 2018 award winners
