Project Overview

Emil Anderson Construction was an integral partner in the Airside Pavement Rehabilitation (RFQ) Paving Project at Kelowna International Airport (YLW). The multiyear expansion project consisted of three phases to reconstruct Taxiway D. Updates included upgrades to end-of-life pavement surfaces on the airfield, aprons, taxiway, and runway.

  • Phase 1 was constructed almost entirely at night to minimize impacts to airport operations.
  • Rehabilitating the existing base structure involved a combination of Foamed Asphalt Stabilized Base (FASB) and asphalt paving.
  • Paving crew at YLW airport in Kelowna

An Exercise in Efficiency

The owner required a balance between cost-effectiveness and construction schedule, leading to this innovative construction method. The reuse and stabilization of the existing pavement structure significantly reduced the overall construction schedule to minimize operational impacts to YLW. The added benefit of a reduced carbon footprint was also a bonus.
