Work Nears Completion on the Jaffray Overhead and Big Sand Creek Bridge Replacement Project

Construction on two Highway 3 bridges in the East Kootenays is in the final stages. The bridges, located near Jaffray, include one 2 km east of the community and another over Big Sand Creek, 2.5 km east. The previous bridges, built in the 1950s, were nearing the end of their lifespan. In 2023, the B.C. government awarded a $25.1-million contract to Emil Anderson Construction for the project, which began construction in the summer of 2023.

Built to modern design standards, the new bridges enhance safety and reliability and better accommodate increased traffic volumes, including the 6,000 locals, tourists, and commercial traffic vehicles that travel the route daily.

“Highway 3 is a critically important route all the way from the Alberta border to Hope,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “These new, modern structures will support local residents, tourists, and commercial users—keeping people and goods on the move.”
